Revolutionizing Sports: Esports Demonstration Event Elevates Hangzhou Asian Games in China

GAWSF Partners' News:

7 November 2023, Hangzhou, China – When the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) announced the debut of Esports as an official medal sport at the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games in September 2022, featuring eight official medal events and two demonstration game titles, it became apparent that the inclusion of Esports reflects the increasing popularity and growth of electronic sports, as well as an understanding of its broader scope of areas within Olympic programs.

After extensive discussions between the OCA and the Asian Electronic Sports Federation (AESF), the announcement was made during the first of the two-day Chefs de Mission Seminar video conferences on 8 September 2021 and the events were to take place at the Hangzhou Esports Centre in China.

Following the official announcement by the Hangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee (HAGOC), the Hangzhou Asian Games Esports Demonstration Event has been confirmed to take place at the Hangzhou Esports Centre on 11 – 12 November 2023. The Demonstration Event consists of two game titles: AIES Robot Sports – Ultimate Battle Robots and AIES XR Sports – Steelraid. The Ultimate Battle Robots event is a science and technology event with digitalization, artificial intelligence, and robot manufacturing as the carrier, and competitive confrontation as the main form of expression. It aims to showcase the new image of China's sports and tech prowess. The Steelraid event combines VR, AR, and MR, large-space VR positioning, motion capture, and other technologies in the virtual space of the competition project.

This Esports Demonstration Event is organized by AESF and hosted by 'MIGU', a subsidiary of China Mobile Communications Group Co., Ltd., under the guidance of HAGOC. The AESF is showcasing these emerging digital sports as it aims to help the public comprehend how digital technology can seamlessly integrate with traditional sports, further extending its impact and scope.

This demonstration event marks the first-ever inclusion of technology and innovation driven sports competitions in the continental games. National Olympic Committees (NOCs) from various Asian countries and regions have shown tremendous enthusiasm for their teams’ participation in the demonstration event.

By working closely with its strategic partner, ‘MIGU’, as well as HAGOC, the AESF is fully committed to offering support for the competition and coordinating necessary resources to help the athletes excel in these digital sports. Through this official demonstration event at the Hangzhou Asian Games, it will showcase the high level of competitiveness in the fusion of technology and sports, pushing the boundaries of Esports even further.
